Can Money Make You Happy?

One of great challenges through the ages has been balancing work and family. For many, part of this balancing act means working outside of the home - being absent from those we love in order to provide for them.

Often, the amount of time we're willing to be apart from our family depends on the compensation we receive. Money, and all it brings, can be a strong influence.

To better understand perceptions about money and family, consider the following survey question:

"Would you reduce the time you currently spend with your kids by 50% if doing so meant earning one million dollars this year?"

61% of those who responded said yes.

Do you gasp at this? Do you picture a one-eyed, snarling, "mommy-thing" who feeds the kids anchovy pizza for breakfast and gives them Bill Gates look-a-like dolls to play with?

Ooooo, that's not a nice visual, is it?

But, hold on. The question leaves some room to explore why a million dollars may be worth giving up time with the family.

Perhaps one million dollars is synonymous with being able to provide a better lifestyle for the family ... a better lifestyle with the promise of more happiness.

Perhaps for some people there is a "wealth goal." Once the money is in the bank it's time to relax and refocus on the family.

Perhaps for some there is an acceptable level of sacrifice they will make, as long as it's temporary and the compensation is worthwhile.

How much are you willing to sacrifice? And what does it mean to give up time with your family?

For me, less time with my family means fewer days finding that my son has smeared lip balm in my shirt sleeves because I told him my elbows were chapped. It means fewer "I painted the smoke detector to match my room" episodes. It means fewer days spent soothing our cat because my warm-hearted child gave him a "fur trim" to beat the summer heat.

Sigh...

Could you give up memories like this for a million dollars?

Perhaps. If the lost time at home were an investment in future happiness... perhaps.

So the question is...

Does money equal happiness?

Economists debated this very question at the annual American Economics Association convention being held in Atlanta this year.

According to Professor Andrew Oswald from the University of Warwick, it is generally accepted that wealth can improve an individual's happiness, but there are other conditions which must be figured into the mix.

For instance, marriage has a strong correlation to happiness in a person's life. Prof. Oswald used his research to calculate that a lasting marriage is equivalent to an annual income of $90,000 USD.

Research by Richard Easterlin at the University of Southern California found that people become less happy if their income rises or decreases in comparison to the income of people they know.

So it would seem that money by itself is not the answer. Relationships are an important consideration, and can influence our happiness in the presence of wealth.

When it comes to sacrificing family in the pursuit of money, no one person can tell another when the sacrifice is too great. It's an individual decision. Money is necessary. Relationships are necessary.

It's nice to be rich... rich in love, rich in money.

Perhaps the best advice one can have when trying to balance family demands with the pursuit of money comes from Samuel Johnson...

It is better to live rich than to die rich.
