Editor's Note

A very warm welcome to you. It's great to have you with me today! I've got some great stuff for you, so settle in and let's get started with a look at...

Sacrifice, Patriotism, and Big Nails

Sacrifice. War means that we must be ready and willing to do our part.

Historically, war has meant making sacrifices. Tighten up your belt and do more with less.

We are at war, right? I think we are. But we are told it's a different kind of war. It seems that at least one aspect of this 'different' war is its attack on our capitalistic beliefs. An attack on....

...our right to shop and go to baseball games!

After all, President Bush has said we should shop and go to baseball games. Go about our normal lives.

But, wait a minute. Where's the sacrifice?

Longer lines at the airport is not a sacrifice. That's an inconvenience. Giving blood. That's a moral response.

There is no denying the supreme sacrifice offered by our soldiers and their families. Nor can words adequately describe the unwitting sacrifice made by the 15,000 children who lost a parent on September 11th.

But for so many of us at home, the question is: "What can I do?" In the face of such loss of life, we are all willing to make sacrifices. Yes?

To me a sacrifice is moving in with your mother-in-law, or living on a diet of cabbage and corned beef.

Ya gotta admit, our wartime response is very intriguing...

...go to war and be a patriotic consumer.

My ten-year-old son definitely got the message. He found a way to fulfill his patriotic duty... with a hammer and two great BIG nails.

Not little nails, mind you. What he had acquired appeared to be the next size down from railroad spikes. Huge.

What could a ten-year-old boy possibly DO with nails this large, you ask?

First, you must keep in mind that President Bush said "shop." Then he said "baseball."

My son had shopped.

He took his allowance and bought a Limited Edition 24K Gold Plated Matchbox Car complete with its own little handsome wall hanger.

Next, in the spirit of baseball, he had hand copied all the verses of our National Anthem onto some really pretty stationary.

Then he took those frightening, gargantuan, medieval looking nails, pounded them into his bedroom wall, and hung his wartime treasures with pride.

While I was trying to recover from the shock of this discovery, he had looked at me as if I were being demoted to the third grade. I just stood there with my jaw at my chest. All he said was: "What?"

What would you do? Punishment in the face of patriotism is not an easy thing to do. In his defense, he assured me the big nails were necessary... permanent hardware, you see.

In the end, I admonished him for damaging the wall and enlisted his aid in repairs. We talked about current events, his new Matchbox car, our National Anthem, and his plans to give his next allowance to the kids in Afghanistan.

Big nails. There's an aggressive statement about patriotism.

And when a ten-year-old talks about giving away his allowance...

...that's a sacrifice.
